45 anni di ipotesi e ricerche. Un mistero che non ha smesso di affascinare studiosi, esperti, visitatori di ogni parte del mondo. Sono i Bronzi di Riace, vero e proprio simbolo identitario della città di Reggio Calabria e del Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Il ritrovamento. Porto Forticchio di Riace Marina, mattina del 16 agosto 1972: il sub Stefano Mariottini, avvista nel fondale della località locridea, a 300 metri dalla costa e a soli 8 metri di profondità, i Bronzi di Riace. L'emozione è immensa. Mariottini contatta subito il soprintendente dell'epoca, Giuseppe Foti, per le operazioni di recupero che avverranno il 21 agosto. Riemerge prima il “Bronzo B” poi il “Bronzo A”, successivamente rinominate “il vecchio” e il “giovane”. Alte rispettivamente 1,98 e 1,97 m, dagli originari 400 kg, oggi il peso è ridotto a circa 160 kg, in virtù della rimozione della terra di fusione operata dagli esperti. Realizzate attorno alla metà V secolo a.C., con una differenza di circa un trentennio l'una dall'altra, le due state presentano stilemi dorici, tipici del Peloponneso o dell'occidente greco. Ciò che resta incerta è la loro identificazione: divinità o guerrieri o forse ancora gli sfortunati figli del re Laio, Eteocle e Polinice, del noto ciclo tebano. Mistero anche sul relitto che li trasportava, mai ritrovato, così come su altri reperti significativi. Questioni che alimentano teorie che lasciano aperti molti spazi interpretativi sulla loro storia. Fonte:strettoweb
