Il Circo Massimo, il più grande edificio per lo spettacolo di tutti i tempi lungo 600 m. e largo 140, è dalla leggenda collegato alle origini stesse della città: infatti, in occasione dei giochi in onore di Conso, sarebbe avvenuto il ratto delle Sabine e quindi il nascere della vita nella città stessa. In realtà una prima sistemazione della Valle Murcia - Murcia era secondo la tradizione il nume tutelare della valle - risale all'epoca dei Tarquini ed è da collegare alla costruzione di una cloaca che permise di drenare tutta la zona e regolarizzare il terreno. Con Giulio Cesare si ha un vero e proprio edificio in muratura, la cui pianta è conservata, almeno parzialmente, nelle costruzioni successive. Di notevole entità fu l'intervento di Augusto: completò; e restaurò l'ippodromo, lo decorò con l'obelisco ora a piazza del Popolo e costruì il pulvinar. Devastato più volte dal fuoco e conseguentemente restaurato, fu ricostruito quasi integralmente in epoca domiziano - traianea, fase cui appartengono per la maggior parte le strutture in laterizio attualmente visibili. Numerosissimi gli interventi degli imperatori successivi, esemplare l'erezione del gigantesco obelisco portato a Roma da Costante II, ora al Laterano. Il circo rimase in attività, forse solo parzialmente, fino al 549 quando Totila dette gli ultimi giochi. La liberazione dell'area, auspicata da decenni, iniziata con i lavori per la creazione della Zona Monumentale fu realizzata negli anni '30 contemporaneamente a grandi opere di scavo le quali, insieme a quelle attualmente in corso, hanno messo in luce buona parte dell'emiciclo ed i resti dell'arco di Tito.
