Roma - autunno 2023 - Si tratta di ciò che rimane di un antico triclino, fatto edificare verso la fine dell'VIII secolo da papa Leone III (da cui Triclinium Leoninum), facente parte dell'antico 'palazzo del laterano'; prendendo a modello una stanza del palazzo imperiale di Costantinopoli Leone III aggiunse al vecchio palazzo una sala per banchetti di rappresentanza; il Liber Pontificalis descrive il triclino come caratterizzato da un'"ampiezza impressionante" e dotato di "un'absibe decorata a mosaico e altre 10 absidi a destra e a sinistra, dipinte con varie rappresentazioni degli Apostoli". La fonte aggiunge infine che Papa Leone III fece sistemare nel triclinium diversi accubita (divani sui quali ci si stendeva per mangiare) e installare, al centro di tale sala pavimentata con marmi preziosi, una grande fontana di porfido rosso a forma di conchiglia. La struttura attualmente visibile risale però alla fine del Cinquecento quando papa Sisto V diede ordine di demolire il vecchio 'palazzo del laterano', preservando comunque il Triclinium Leoninum, e fece costruire al suo posto l'attuale edificio molto più piccolo, progettato da Domenico Fontana che si era ispirato all'architettura di Palazzo Farnese.
