In Italia il Falco di palude è nidificante con importanti popolazioni migratrici e svernanti. Molto irregolare e localizzata la distribuzione della popolazione nidificante, concentrata principalmente nell'Italia settentrionale – basso corso del Po e la regione dei grandi laghi lombardo-piemontesi – con importanti aree di nidificazione anche in Toscana e Sardegna. La popolazione di Falco di palude cresce d'inverno, in quanto agli esemplari “italiani” si aggiungono gli individui svernanti provenienti dal Nord Europa, principalmente Polonia, Russia europea e Finlandia. Di conseguenza, mentre gli avvistamenti risultano più rari e localizzati dalla primavera all'autunno, la specie è particolarmente diffusa e comune durante il resto dell'anno, mentre considerando le varie sottospecie, il Falco di palude presenta un areale di nificazione amplissimo che va dalla Scandinavia al Nord Africa, fino ad Asia, India e Australia.
