Foro di Augusto. Il secondo dei Fori Imperiali ad essere costruito dopo quello di Cesare, fu eretto per celebrare la vittoria di Augusto su Bruto e Cassio (gli assassini di Gaio Giulio Cesare) nella battaglia di Filippi nel 41 a.C. I lavori si trascinarono a lungo, dal momento che l'inaugurazione ebbe luogo solo 40 anni più tardi, nel 2 a.C. Analogamente al Foro di Cesare fu costruito su un terreno in precedenza occupato da abitazioni private ed acquistato con proventi di prede belliche. Svetonio ci narra quale fosse la ragione dell'altissimo muro di recinzione: “l'imperatore si ritrovò con un terreno alquanto più stretto di quanto avesse desiderato e d'altronde non volle usare le maniere forti per espropriare alcuni possessori dei terreni circostanti”. Forse questa fu una delle ragioni ma un tale imponente muraglione, in opera quadrata di peperino e pietra “gabina” con parti in travertino, alto 30 metri, fu destinato più verosimilmente a proteggere ed isolare il Foro dal retrostante quartiere malfamato della “Subura“, collegati tra loro soltanto attraverso due passaggi ad arco: quello a nord, a tre fornici, e quello a sud, ad un solo fornice e conosciuto anche, dal Quattrocento, come “Arco dei Pantani“, dal “pantano”, dal fango che invadeva il Foro in quell'epoca. La funzione della nuova piazza monumentale fu di dare uno sfogo alle folle che si accalcavano nei due fori più antichi (il Foro Romano ed il Foro di Cesare) e di fornire nuovo spazio per i processi, anche se in sostanza fu soprattutto un centro rappresentativo, destinato a glorificare l'imperatore. Il Foro di Augusto era lungo, in origine, circa 125 metri e largo 118: purtroppo via dei Fori Imperiali ne ricopre la parte anteriore e quanto resta appare schiacciato ed immiserito. La piazza era fiancheggiata sui lati maggiori da due portici elevati su tre scalini di marmo e costituiti da colonne di marmo cipollino sulle quali correva un alto attico ornato da cariatidi, alternate a scudi di Giove Ammone ed altre divinità. Al di là dei portici, pavimentati con marmi policromi, si aprivano due ampie esedre simmetriche in blocchi di tufo e peperino, al centro delle quali vi erano nicchie inquadrate da due colonne di cipollino: l'esedra situata a sinistra del tempio custodiva la statua di Enea con Anchise e Ascanio, mentre quella a destra la statua di Romolo.
