Teatro di Marcello. - Da Vivere Roma: L'edificio venne eretto nel Campo Marzio, nel luogo che la tradizione aveva consacrato alle rappresentazioni sceniche, dove dal 179 a. C. si trovava il theatrum et proscenium ad Apollinis, connesso con il tempio di Apollo. Il progetto fu iniziato da Giulio Cesare, il quale espropriò per largo tratto la zona, demolendo gli edifici esistenti, e ripreso da Augusto, con nuovi espropri per ampliare la superficie ed erigere un edificio più grande. Probabilmente completato già nel 17 a. C, il Teatro di Marcello fu dedicato nel 13 o 11 a.C. alla memoria di Marcello, nipote dell'imperatore, destinato alla successione, ma morto a Baia nel 27 a. C. Restaurato da Vespasiano e da Alessandro Severo, ancora in funzione nel IV secolo, successivamente, data la posizione elevata nei pressi del fiume, fu mutato in fortezza di proprietà dei Pierleoni e dei Fabi. Nel '500, Baldassarre Peruzzi eresse il palazzo tuttora esistente per conto dei Savelli, acquistato due secoli dopo dagli Orsini. La parte inferiore, corrispondente alle strutture romane, fu acquisita negli anni '30 dal Comune di Roma, scavata e restaurata dopo aver proceduto ad un'opera di radicale liberazione dell'area. Il Teatro di Marcello era una grandiosa costruzione dal diametro di 130 m, in cui era realizzato in forma compiuta il teatro di tipo romano. La cavea, di forma semicircolare, era su sostruzioni in blocchi di tufo, in opera reticolata e in laterizio, sulla quale si appoggiavano le gradinate in marmo bianco. All'esterno era caratterizzato da una facciata in travertino a triplice ordine di cui si conservano i due inferiori ad arcate su pilastri con semicolonne doriche e ioniche. Le chiavi d'arco dei piani inferiori erano decorate da maschere teatrali colossali in marmo, relative a tragedia, commedia e dramma satiresco. La scena, di modesta profondità, con prospetto probabilmente rettilineo, decorata da colonne e statue di marmi bianchi e colorati, era fiancheggiata dalle due aule o parasceni a triplice navata e completata alle spalle da una grande abside eretta contro le eventuali inondazioni del Tevere. 36 vasi bronzei facilitavano l'acustica. Il teatro era coperto da un velario, e aveva una capienza calcolata in 15.000 posti, 20.000 in caso di necessità. In seguito a un intervento di rinnovamento dell'area, ha riaperto al pubblico, con accesso gratuito, il passaggio che mette in collegamento via Montanara - ciò che rimane dell'omonima piazza ai piedi della Rupe Tarpea, demolita negli anni Trenta - con il Portico d'Ottavia e il Ghetto. Il nuovo percorso pedonale è stato realizzato in modo da non interferire con le rimanenze archeologiche ed è delimitato da paletti dissuasori e catenelle che ridisegnano l'accessibilità dell'area. La nuova definizione degli spazi permette di avvicinarsi maggiormente al Teatro per ammirare la maestosità dell'architettura romana, fino al limitare dei fornici, valorizzando l'esperienza di visita. Nell'area archeologica che circonda il Teatro di Marcello si trovano anche il Tempio di Bellona e il Tempio di Apollo. Tempio di Bellona Costruito nel 296 a.C., era un parallelepipedo con 6 colonne sulla fronte e 11 colonne sui lati lunghi, eretto su un alto podio con gradinata frontale. Attualmente del tempio resta il nucleo cementizio del podio di età augustea. Tempio di Apollo Eretto nel 431 a.C., fu più volte restaurato e rifatto, da ultimo, in età augustea da di Gaio Sosio con una struttura simile a quello di Bellona, con due scale laterali. Ne restano tre colonne corinzie in marmo bianco ricostruite nel 1940.
