La chiesa di San Lorenzo è la più antica di Firenze. E' stata consacrata nel 393 da S.Ambrogio e dedicata al martire Lorenzo; dell'originale costruzione poco è arrivato fino ai nostri giorni. La chiesa fu costruita per 2 volte: una nel 1059 (in stile romanico) e la seconda (grazie anche all'apporto della famiglia dei Medici che volle farne un tempio personale) secondo il progetto di Brunelleschi (dal 1418 al 1421) e, dopo la sua morte, ultimata da Antonio Manetti nel 1461. L'ultima ristrutturazione, quella che oggi possiamo ammirare, è considerata una delle migliori costruzioni del rinascimento. L'interno è diviso in 3 navate ed ogni navata è composta da arcate. La chiesa fu abbellita dai più famosi artisti fiorentini dell'epoca e tutt'oggi risulta integra nonostante i vari rifacimenti del XIX secolo. La sacrestia vecchia è opera del Brunelleschi ed è decorata con affreschi di Donatello. Nella cupola della stessa sacrestia è presente un affresco che raffigura un piccolo planetario nel quale sono raffigurati con precisione unica i corpi celesti che componevano il cielo di Firenze nell'estate del 1442. Nella sacrestia nuova sono presenti le tombe di Lorenzo il Magnifico e di Giuliano posizionate e costruite secondo un progetto di Michelangelo. Nel 1418 Brunelleschi stese un piano per la ricostruzione della chiesa agostiniana di S. Lorenzo, che era la chiesa parrocchiale dei Medici; di conseguenza la sua storia è sempre stata molto legata alle sorti della potente famiglia. Quando i lavori erano già a buon punto, una serie di rovesci finanziari costrinse all'esilio Cosimo de' Medici, e ciò comportò l'improvvisa chiusura del cantiere, che non riaprì fino al 1442, quattro anni prima della morte di Brunelleschi. Brunelleschi, usa la campata quadrata per costituire uno spazio armonico e ripetitivo che domina sia la navata, che consta di quattro moduli, che il transetto. Lo spazio è scandito dalle cappelle laterali e da una sapiente distribuzione della luce. Accanto al tema basilicale che domina la chiesa, Brunelleschi recupera in questo complesso architettonico anche un'altra forma della tradizione, cioè la pianta centrale, che viene applicata nella Sacrestia Vecchia. L'essenziale decorazione è rigorosamente a due toni: i muri sono dipinti in bianco, mentre la grigia pietra serena sottolinea le principale linee di forza. Per concludere, nel complesso di S. Lorenzo Brunelleschi proponeva il suo nuovo tipo di chiesa, accentuatamente classicheggiante, irrorata dalla luce per una netta evidenza architettonica. -------------------------- Commenti e critiche sempre molto gradite.
