Donnas è un piccolo paese della Bassa Valle d'Aosta situato a 300 m sul livello del mare. Nel primo secolo a.C. i Romani vi lasciarono una visibile impronta della loro civiltà, scalpellando nella viva roccia , per più di 200 m., una strada ed un arco di pietra sotto il quale transitavano i carri che percorrevano la via delle Gallie. Donnas, per molti secoli "capitale" della Bassa Valle, gode, nell'ambiente alpino, di un clima mite che permette di coltivare piante mediterranee (ulivo, limoni, palme , mimose) ma che soprattutto favorisce la coltivazione della vite, oggi come nel passato, come è dimostrato da numerosi documenti storici di diversi secoli, tra cui due del 1200.La viticoltura a Donnas, ha infatti tradizioni antichissime, anche se è una coltivazione difficile tenuto conto della forte pendenza della montagna. Ma i ripidi declivi sono vinti dai terrazzamenti secolari trattenuti da muri alti anche 4 metri. A Donnas, la situazione fondiaria delle aziende viticole è caratterizzata da dimensioni molto limitate e spezzettate. La lavorazione è manuale e distribuita su tutti i mesi dell'anno. D'inverno, mentre il vino matura, si costruiscono e si riparano le pergole, si pota e poi si legano i tralci con i vimini (gore). Successivamente si fanno 5-6 trattamenti per le malattie tradizionali della vite (oidio e peronospora) utilizzando prodotti a bassa tossicità. Se la produzione sembra eccessiva, si provvede ad eliminare alcuni grappoli perché quelli rimasti maturino meglio. Le vendemmie iniziano a Settembre col Pinot Grigio, proseguono ad inizio Ottobre col Vien de Nus, per il vino da tavola, e nella seconda metà di Ottobre col Nebbiolo-Picotendro e terminano a metà Novembre con la vendemmia tardiva dei grappoli già leggermente appassiti di Nebbiolo per il Vieilles Vignes.
