Il marasso tra le specie del genere Vipera è quella che presenta la più ampia valenza ecologica. Laddove presente può colonizzare praticamente tutti gli habitat, dalle aree planiziali e collinari fino al limite delle nevi delle zone montane. Al contrario di Vipera aspis è igrofita e può occupare anche biotopi umidi e freddi, in Scozia sono stati osservati esemplari in termoregolazione tra le rocce a livello del mare bagnate dalle onde, addirittura alcuni soggetti sono stati sorpresi a diversi metri dalla riva, per questo viene considerata una specie idrofita. Lungo la catena alpina occupa principalmente le aree di pascolo del piano montano da 1000m fino al piano nivale raggiungendo i 3000m. In queste aree predilige le aree di pascolo ricche di rifugi e ben soleggiate, le torbiere, i margini ecotonali e le peccete luminose. le aree aperte arbustate composte da Alnus viridis, Juniperus nana, Rhododendron ferrugineum e Vaccinium sp. I casi di sintopia con Vipera aspis sono piuttosto rari e generalmente nel caso in cui i due areali si sovrappongono il marasso è confinato alle quote più alte, mentre in alcune località, come ad esempio nelle Alpi Svizzere centrali non è insolito osservare le due specie sfruttare il medesimo substrato.
