Pieris rapae, (Linné, 1758) - Famiglia Pieridae - Sottofamiglia Pierinae - Apertura alare: Da 3,8 a 4,8 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in tutte le regioni, isole comprese. - Habitat: Prati e ampie radure dal livello del mare sino a oltre 2000 m. - Periodo di volo: Polivoltina. In rapporto alle condizioni climatiche delle varie località può avere da tre a cinque generazioni con sfarfallamenti che si susseguono da marzo a ottobre. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Varie crucifere o altre piante contenenti i glicosidi della senape. - Dimorfismo sessuale . Femmina con due macchie nere nella zona mediana dell'ala anteriore, mentre i maschi ne presentano una sola. - Variazioni: Gli esemplari delle generazioni estive presentano sul rovescio delle ali posteriori una notevole riduzione della velatura scura e una colorazione gialla più accentuata. - Specie simili : Pieris mannii che presenta frange di colore grigio o a tratti scuri in corrispondenza della macchia nera apicale, mentre in P. rapae queste risultano sempre bianchissime. In P. mannii la macchia nera apicale si protende lungo il bordo esterno dell'ala con alcune squame nere in corrispondenza della seconda e terza nervatura mediana. Inoltre la forma della macchia nera al centro dell'ala anteriore in P. rapae è rotondeggiante, mentre in P. mannii è più quadrata e con il lato, rivolto verso il bordo dell'ala, arcuato con concavità verso l'interno.
