Le origini della chiesetta di San Pietro sono antichissime. Dal V secolo sorgeva un piccolo tempio Paleocristiano, che in epoca Longobardia la custodia era affidata ai Monaci di San Colombano di Bobbio: Nel X secolo passò alle dipendenze della diocesi di Luni e venne dedicato a San Pietro il 19 luglio 1118. Nel XIII secolo i Genovesi costruirono una seconda chiesa comunicante con il primo tempio paleocristiano che dopo varie vicessitudini ( incendio del 1494, attacchi flotta Carlo VIII, bombardamenti Aragonesi, guerre napoleoniche ) agli inizi del XX secolo si pose mano a dei restauri conservativi. Nel 1934 in ottobre la chiesa è stata riconsacrata fino ad arrivare ai nostri tempi ed essere diventata una delle attrazioni turistiche più famose del luogo
