Il nome del genere Papilio deriva dalla parola latina papilio che significa farfalla. Deve il suo nome a Palinuro, il mitico nocchiero di Enea che condusse la flotta durante la traversata da Troia fino in Italia. Ha un'apertura alare che raggiunge circa 8–10 centimetri. I lati dorsali delle ali sono ricoperti da una polvere di scaglie verdi e il fondo varia dal verdastro scuro al nero, con larghe fasce metalliche verde smeraldo brillante. Le parti inferiori sono nere con macchie arancioni, bianche e blu lungo i bordi delle ali posteriori, che mostrano code estese all'estremità. Il volo di queste farfalle è rapido e abbastanza veloce.
