Il ponte Dom Luís I è un ponte ad arco in ferro lungo 385 m e alto 85 m, che varca il fiume Duero nella città portoghese di Porto. Il livello superiore del ponte, completato nel 1886 da un allievo di Gustave Eiffel, è riservato ai pedoni e a una linea della metropolitana, mentre a quello inferiore, costeggiato da uno stretto marciapiede, scorre il traffico ordinario. Prima della sua realizzazione i pedoni dovevano attraversare il fiume passando sopra un ponte formato da una serie di vecchie barche per il trasporto del porto legate tra loro. Inoltre, all'epoca le acque del fiume erano molto più agitate poiché non esistevano dighe a monte, e la situazione era quindi decisamente precaria. Quando nel 1809 Napoleone invase la città, decine di persone tentarono una fuga disordinata al di là del fiume, ma provocarono il crollo del ponte improvvisato rovinando nel fiume e annegando nelle sue acque impetuose.
