Le cascine erano veri e propri villaggi, popolati da centinaia di persone, il cui imperativo era l'autosufficienza. Dentro c'erano abitazioni per i proprietari e alloggi per i contadini, ricoveri per gli animali e i mezzi agricoli. E, separate, e a una certa distanza, i dormitori delle mondine, che nei periodi più impegnativi della coltura del riso arrivavano a migliaia da tutto il Piemonte, ma anche dal Veneto e dall'Emilia e anche da più lontano. Oggi non è più così, il ciclo produttivo del riso è quasi totalmente meccanizzato, di manodopera ne serve relativamente poca rispetto a qualche decennio fa e il risicoltore preferisce vivere in città, a Vercelli, o nei tanti e piccoli paesi che sorgono in provincia, per cui le cascine hanno perduto il ruolo e l'importanza che avevano una volta e la maggior parte di esse sono andate in decadenza o sono prive di adeguata manutenzione, tranne rare eccezioni come quella in foto, la cascina Darola, nel Comune di Trino, di antica storia e tradizione (quella delle “Grange” vercellesi), tuttora attiva dal punto di vista economico e produttivo e che per estensione (circa 1.000 ettari di cui 400 coltivati a riso), architettura e retaggio potrebbe essere considerata a pieno titolo una piccola Versailles fra le risaie piemontesi.
