Uccello molto sociale, che nidifica in colonie numerose e condivide vasti territori di caccia, l'Avvoltoio o Grifone di Rüppell è uno dei grandi avvoltoi africani, con un'apertura alare che può superare i 2,5 metri e un peso che varia dai 6 ai 9 chili. Vola normalmente a grandi altezze, spesso oltre i 5.000 metri, coprendo distanze di decine di chilometri nella sua ricerca delle carcasse di cui si ciba. Una curiosità: risulta essere l'uccello che ha volato più in alto. Si riporta, infatti, che nel 1973 sul cielo della Costa d'Avorio un aereo delle linee aeree avoriane si sia scontrato in volo a ben 11.300 m di altitudine con un esemplare di questa specie!
