Il Coleottero giraffa (Trachelophorus giraffa), endemico delle foreste pluviali del Madagascar orientale, è l'insetto dal collo più sproporzionato al mondo. È lungo circa 2,5 cm collo incluso (che costituisce più della metà della lunghezza dell'animale). Appartiene alla famiglia dei Curculionidi, volgarmente detti punteruoli, la più estesa famiglia del regno animale con oltre 97.000 specie. Il T. giraffa appartiene ad un gruppo particolare di curculionidi, chiamati Attelabidae o in modo informale “insetti arrotolatori di foglie”. Le femmine infatti creano con le foglie arrotolate dei nidi a forma di “sigaro”, al cui interno depongono un singolo uovo. Le larve si nutrono dei tessuti fogliari che formano la parte interna del nido. La principale fonte di cibo del T. giraffa, la Dichaetanthera cordifolia, ha foglie molto coriacee. Il collo pieghevole dalla muscolatura possente e le mandibole particolarmente affilate servono per rosicchiare la venatura centrale della foglia prima di arrotolarla. Nella stagione riproduttiva i maschi si percuotono a vicenda con il collo in modo simile a quello delle giraffe, fino a quando l'avversario non viene scaraventato giù dalla foglia.
