Mentre passeggiavo nel lungomare ho trovato questa vecchia nave mezzo affondata, è ancora ormeggiata al molo, probabilmente verrà portata via e smantellata a breve, ma mi ha colpito vederla ancora lì, quasi come fosse imperterrita a non arrendersi al suo destino. Ognuno ci vede quello che vuole nelle immagini, io ci ho visto questo, perseveranza. Gobe ND1000, 137 sec. Ve la racconterò cercando di essere, nei limiti del possibile sintetico. Stiamo parlando della Motonave "Gennaro Cantiello", varata nel Luglio 1977 a Mazara del Vallo, 50 metri di lunghezza e 185 tonnellate di stazza lorda, una capienza di circa 85-90 passeggeri. A fare da Madrina al varo di questa nave che porta il nome del marito, la sig.ra Lucia Nardin, vedova del brigadiere Gennaro Cantiello, Medaglia d'oro al Valor Militare. L'anno dopo la Cantiello arriva all'Asinara, al porto di Cala d'Oliva, entrando così in servizio effettivo in forze alla polizia penitenziaria. La Cantiello ha trasportato per anni e anni uomini e merci facendo la spola tra la Sardegna e l'Asinara ed è diventata con gli anni un vero e proprio simbolo di quel "collegamento" fra l'isola madre e la "Caienna" dell'Asinara e che è rimasto vivo e indelebile nei ricordi di chi ha vissuto e lavorato sull'isola. La Gennaro Cantiello potrebbe raccontare la storia dell'Italia "degli anni di piombo", la storia del terrorismo brigatista è infatti passata dalla nave al carcere di Fornelli, tra i passeggeri della motonave infatti troviamo alcuni nomi piuttosto noti: Renato Curcio e Alberto Franceschini, che nel 79' organizzarono la famosa "rivolta delle caffettiere". Ha solcato anche la storia della nuova Camorra organizzata quando ha trasportato Raffaele Cutolo "O Professore" che lo stesso Sandro Pertini volle trasferire all'Asinara per allontanarlo dal carcere di Asti dal quale, nonostante la detenzione, riusciva a controllare il suo impero criminale. Anche la storia del Maxi-processo contro Cosa Nostra ha navigato sulla Cantiello, trasportò infatti i giudici Falcone e Borsellino che nel 1985 si blindarono nella foresteria dell'Asinara per preparare appunto il maxi-processo. Un altro dei passeggeri che balzarono agli onori della cronaca fu Matteo Boe, l'ex primula rossa del banditismo Sardo, unico peraltro a riuscire ad evadere dal carcere di Fornelli nel 1986. Quando infine venne emanata, dopo ben 113 anni di permanenza dell'Amministrazione Penitenziaria sull'isola dell'Asinara, l'ordinanza di Dismissione della struttura carceraria, la Cantiello compì il suo ultimo viaggio da Cala d'Oliva a Porto Torres. Era nel Maggio del 1988 e quel "collegamento" di cui ancora oggi troviamo testimonianza nei racconti dei testimoni di quel periodo, si interruppe. Ha un passato importante la Cantiello, un pezzo di storia di Sardegna, dell'Italia e della Forza di Polizia Penitenziaria tanto che cimeli della nave, come la bussola e il timone, vengono esposti ancora oggi nelle più importanti manifestazioni e fiere dedicate alle forze di polizia. Un passato importante di cui portava i segni, incisi sulle panche delle celle c'erano infatti i nomi dei famigerati passeggeri, un passato che avrebbe potuto ancora raccontare. Nel 2004 fu acquistata da un privato Cagliaritano, Salvatore Pergola, che la portò a Cagliari con l'idea di utilizzarla per delle escursioni culturali, poi la ristrutturò e ne fece un ristorante-museo. Fino al 2016 è stato un locale galleggiante di discreto successo, poi il lento declino, culminato con una falla nello scafo che ha rischiato di farla affondare, rendendo necessario l'intervento dei vigili del fuoco per scongiurare il peggio. Da allora è rimasta ferma, con il divieto di salire a bordo, incagliata fra gli scogli della burocrazia e dei permessi scaduti, in una battaglia costante per impedirne la demolizione. Oggi questo destino sembra inesorabile, probabilmente verrà davvero smantellata e demolita. Ma chi era Gennaro Cantiello ? Gennaro Cantiello è stato (e sarà sempre) un'eroe. Brigadiere del Corpo degli Agenti di Custodia, nato a Formicola (CE) nel 1938 e morto in servizio ad Alessandria nel 1974. Il 9 Maggio del 1974 infatti, nella Casa Penale di Alessandria, tre detenuti armati di pistole presero in ostaggio il personale dell'istituto, tra cui anche il Prof. Campi, insegnante presso la casa penale, altri detenuti e lo stesso Brigadiere Cantiello. Dopo diversi tentativi di mediazione, le forze dell'ordine fecero irruzione per liberare gli ostaggi, ne scaturì un violento scontro a fuoco nel quale rimasero feriti gravemente il Prof. Campi e il medico dell'istituto dott. Roberto Gandolfi, che fu portato in salvo fuori proprio da Cantiello che aveva ancora le mani legate. Cantiello poi tornò dove si erano asserragliati i detenuti assieme agli altri ostaggi, per fare in modo che non uccidessero altre persone a causa del suo mancato ritorno. Un altro tentativo di irruzione fu messo in atto il giorno dopo, l'epilogo fu tragico. Nell'assalto rimasero uccisi Gennaro Cantiello, l'assistente sociale Graziella Vassallo Giarola, l'Appuntato Sebastiano Gaeta, ucciso nel tentativo di fare da scudo con il proprio corpo agli altri ostaggi, e tre dei detenuti che avevano innescato la rivolta. Che dire, il bello della fotografia per me è anche questo. Scoperta. Ho fotografato, senza saperlo, un pezzo di storia. La vidi per la prima volta l'anno scorso, ancora galleggiava, andavo a trovare degli amici e non ho prestato attenzione a quella vecchia nave grigia, anonima e arrugginita. Quante volte camminiamo vicino alla storia e non ce ne accorgiamo ?
