Continuiamo il nostro viaggio intergalattico. Durante la notte di luna nuova del mese di Agosto ho rivolto il telescopio verso la Nebulosa tulipano (Sh2-101). Si tratta di una fantastica regione H II situata nel tratto iniziale del braccio di Orione (uno dei bracci di spirale della nostra Via Lattea) ad una distanza di circa 8000 anni luce. La sorgente energetica che eccita gli atomi della nebulosa è una potente radiazione ultravioletta emessa dalle brillanti stelle di classe spettrale O, in particolare la stella Simbad (HDE227018) la quale brilla al centro del tulipano cosmico. Altra peculiarità della foto è quello sbuffo di forma arcuata di colore bluastro visibile sulla destra della Nebulosa Tulipano. Ebbene, dovete sapere che quel “BOW SHOCK” è il risultato visivo dell'interazione gravitazionale tra un buco nero della grandezza superiore alle 14 masse solari, ed una stella super gigante blu HDE226868. Il disco di accrescimento del buco nero è alimentato dai gas della stella che, aumentando in modo vertiginoso la propria temperatura, riescono ad emettere raggi X. Il sistema binario denominato Cygnus-X1 è una delle sorgenti di raggi X più potenti osservabile dalla terra. Piccola curiosità! Cygnus X-1 è stata l'oggetto nel 1974 di una scommessa scherzosa tra i fisici Stephen Hawking e Kip Thorne, nella quale Hawking scommise che la sorgente non fosse originata da un buco nero.
