Brenthis hecate ([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) - Famiglia Nymphalidae - Sottofamiglia Heliconiidae - Apertura alare: Da 3,7 a 4,5 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente dal nord Italia sino alla Campania e alla Puglia, ma con colonie molto isolate tra loro. - Habitat: Radure di boschi chiari e cespuglieti, da 200 a 1300 m., ma sugli Appennini è stata rinvenuta anche a 1700 m. - Periodo di volo: Univoltina da metà maggio a metà luglio. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Filipendula ulmaria. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina più grande, con colorazione fulva leggermente più chiara, disegni neri più estesi e leggera velatura scura. - Variazioni: Le diverse popolazioni variano molto nelle dimensioni. - Specie simili: Si differenzia dalle specie del genere Brenthis per la mancanza di viola sul rovescio delle ali e da quelle del genere Fabriciana per la serie di macchie premarginali che risultano staccate dal bordo e di forma ovale.
