Nella Napoli del 1890, Matilde Serao nel suo “Ventre di Napoli”, descrive la vita, i modi, il cibo del popolo napoletano. Specifica che, con un soldo, la scelta è abbastanza varia…una vecchia, dà nove castagne, un'altra vecchia dà due spighe di granoturco cotte nell'acqua, o una povera donna che allatta suo figlio e soffia sopra un braciere di terracotta, dà due spighe di granoturco arrostite. Ad ottobre dello stesso anno, un provvedimento dello Stato, determina la requisizione dei beni ecclesiastici, e le monache del convento Sant'Orsola Benincasa sono costrette a ritornare libere. Nel suo “L'anima semplice”, Suor Giovanna della Croce, si ritrova così, spogliata della vita monacale e costretta a lavorare per tirare avanti, spogliata della sua identità, perdendo anche la dignità. Proprio in quest'epoca, nasceva la mia nonna materna, ed il papà, ingegnere strutturale, generosissimo con tutti, spesso si recava a Roma per lavoro, dove in un'occasione accompagnato dalla moglie, approfittò di farsi fare un ritratto fotografico dal rinomato fotografo A.Bottai. Questo il suo ultimo ritratto con la giovane moglie. Poco dopo, per una malattia agli occhi, allora non curabile, rimase totalmente cieco, e gli sciacalli, da Lui considerati amici, attraverso procure sottoscritte con inganno, lo lasciarono completamente sul lastrico. Questo ricordo, per non dimenticare cosa accadde, a chi dell'infinità bontà, ne fù vittima. Foto originale dell'epoca, conservata con passione e amore, per tre intere generazioni.
