L'allevamento dei lepidotteri, oltre a proteggere le varie specie, mi consente di osservare e fotografare tutte le particolari fasi della loro vita. La scorsa estate sono riuscito a fotografare l'ultima muta del macaone e prossimamente pubblicherò tutte le foto che documentano questa particolare fase. Quando allevo alcune specie di lepidotteri, posiziono all'interno dei fauna box qualche rametto per invogliare i bruchi a fare lì la crisalide. In questo modo poi posso spostarli e fotografare tutte le fasi della metamorfosi. Ho visto però che spesso preferiscono impuparsi sotto il coperchio del contenitore perché lo ritengono un luogo più adatto; posizionando i rametti quando i bruchi sono ancora piccoli, sono riuscito a fargli capire che sono sicuri e adatti allo scopo. Il bruco, dopo aver trovato la giusta posizione, per mantenersi aggrappato tesse lentamente sotto il suo corpo uno strato appiccicoso composto da filamenti di seta; in seguito, girando la testa a destra e a sinistra, costruisce anche una resistente cintura protettiva che lo avvolge completamente al rametto. I filamenti sono importantissimi perché consentono alle crisalidi di resistere anche alla pioggia e al vento forte dei mesi invernali. Per i miei bruchi non ci sono pericoli, mi è capitato di allevare 2 esemplari che non si erano attaccati bene e ho dovuto staccare le crisalidi, ma ve lo racconterò un'altra volta. Per la preparazione dei filamenti sono necessarie alcune ore, dopo le quali il bruco smette di muoversi e inizia la metamorfosi. Dopo 1 o 2 giorni arriva il momento della sua ultima muta, durante la quale si libera della pelle, chiamata cuticola, facendo uscire al suo posto la crisalide. Questa foto documenta i primi secondi della muta, quando con delle forti contrazioni la crisalide rompe la cuticola dietro la testa. In seguito la fa scivolare lungo il corpo fino a farla rimanere attaccata solo alla parte posteriore, poi la fa cadere con dei movimenti circolari. Per completare la muta sono necessari pochi minuti. Anche in questa fase la cintura di seta svolge il suo importantissimo compito, la crisalide non può attaccarsi completamente al rametto e si mantiene aggrappata con la cintura e con la parte posteriore del corpo. Se la cintura di seta non è costruita bene, durante le contrazioni potrebbe rompersi. Completata la muta, la crisalide smette di muoversi e in circa 20 minuti si avvicina al rametto in quella che sarà la sua posizione fino alla nascita della farfalla. Per fotografare questa fase sono stato in attesa ad osservare il bruco per tutto il pomeriggio, spesso si muoveva ma era ancora troppo presto. Erano circa le 19,30 quando finalmente ha iniziato la muta, ho fatto molte foto fino a quando ha smesso di agitarsi, poi mi sono fermato ad osservarla per un po' prima di iniziare la mia solita esplorazione notturna. Avrei voluto fotografare con la luce del tramonto ma era troppo tardi ed era già quasi buio, in natura bisogna adattarsi. Sono molto soddisfatto di aver assistito a questa bellissima scena, che secondo me in pochi hanno visto e fotografato.
