ll borgo di Cassinetta di Lugagnano: le origini antiche Sarebbe più corretto chiamare questo borgo Cassinetta e Lugagnano, poiché anticamente i due abitati erano distinti. Di origine romana è Lugagnano, sulla sponda destra del Naviglio, il cui nome deriva probabilmente da Lucanianus, aggettivo riferito al nome proprio Lucanius. Il toponimo Cassinetta ha origine dalla quattrocentesca Cassina Biraga fondata da Maffiolo Birago, maestro d'aula della Camera Ducale di Filippo Maria Visconti, signore di Milano. Cassinetta di Lugagnano, in provincia di Milano, è uno dei borghi più belli d'Italia. Le origini affondano nell'epoca romana: ci sono indizi di un insediamento costituito probabilmente da piccole comunità agricole. In un documento del 1251 compare per la prima volta il nome di Lugagnano (Lucanianus). Nel 1435, Maffiolo Birago, maestro d'aula della Camera Ducale di Filippo Maria Visconti, fa costruire la chiesa dedicata a Sant'Antonio Abate. I due nuclei urbani di Cassinetta e Lugagnano, situati sulle rive opposte del Naviglio Grande, sono collegati da un ponte a schiena d'asino. Il ponte sul Naviglio fu ricostruito nel 1862 per facilitare la navigazione sul canale. Accanto è posta la statua di San Carlo Borromeo, realizzata nel 1749 per ricordare la sua breve sosta nel 1584: ammalato, si fermò qui mentre navigava sul Naviglio diretto a Milano, dove sarebbe morto poco dopo. Ci sono molte residenze nobiliari sul Naviglio, appartenute alle più importanti famiglie milanesi , una delle più bella è “villa di delizia”. Infatti, la definizione fu coniata nel XVIII secolo dall'incisore Marcantonio Dal Re, in occasione dell'illustrazione del suo libro sulle bellezze architettoniche del luogo. (da habitat.it.
