Le enigmatiche grandule coronate vivono nelle distese aride e brulle del Nord Africa e del Medio Oriente. Come i loro congeneri, questi uccelli dal piumaggio mimetico e vagamente simili ai columbidi, sono in grado di sopravvivere in alcuni degli habitat più aridi del pianeta nutrendosi quasi esclusivamente di semi. Formano piccoli stormi, che diventano molto più grandi quando gli uccelli si riuniscono alle fonti d'acqua all'inizio e alla fine della giornata. Le grandule sono monogame e nidificano a molti chilometri di distanza dalla pozza più vicina, fino a 70 km, e per bere possono volare avanti e indietro fino a 150 km al giorno. Fino ai 2 mesi i piccoli non sono in grado di volare per intraprendere il lungo tragitto che normalmente fanno i genitori. Per superare questo ostacolo, i maschi adulti portano l'acqua ai pulcini assorbendola nelle penne del petto, che sono adattate per contenere 3-4 volte più acqua di una spugna.
