Nell'area del Foro di Traiano, in un angolo ancora oggi particolarmente suggestivo della città, esisteva una piccola cappella che fu donata alla fine del Quattrocento all'Università dei Fornari. Nel 1507 la confraternita fece abbattere la chiesa per costruirne una più grande: i lavori, affidati ad Antonio da Sangallo il Giovane, furono portati a termine circa settant'anni dopo da Giacomo Del Duca, allievo di Michelangelo, al quale si devono la bella cupola e il campanile dalle linee prebarocche. Nella seconda metà dell' Ottocento, la chiesa fu restaurata da Luca Carimini e Giuseppe Sacconi, il futuro architetto del Vittoriano. L'edificio, semplice ma di grande effetto, è formato da un basamento quadrato in laterizi e travertino, ancora espressione dell'architettura del primo Cinquecento, sul quale si innesta un alto tamburo ottagonale. La cupola, “sovradimensionata” rispetto alle dimensioni dell'edificio, è coronata da una grande ed elaborata lanterna vuota, soprannominata la “Gabbia dei grilli”. Un alto portale decorato da un bassorilievo con la “Vergine col Bambino e la casa di Loreto”, attribuito ad Andrea Sansovino, dà accesso all'interno, un ottagono iscritto in un quadrato con quattro cappelle semicircolari. La chiesa è ancora oggi patrocinata dal Pio Sodalizio dei Fornari, rimasto attivo anche dopo lo scioglimento delle corporazioni nell'Ottocento. Ne fanno parte i proprietari, gli esercenti, i lavoranti e i garzoni di fornai e ha sede ancora oggi in un edificio alle spalle della chiesa. Il sodalizio il 10 dicembre di ogni anno celebra, come nel passato, la ricorrenza della traslazione della Santa Casa di Loreto.(Da Turismoroma.it) Tutta la mia gratitudine agli amici che lasceranno un cenno del loro passaggio e che esprimeranno una critica positiva o negativa (come sempre utile per imparare).
