Le balene grigie (Eschrichtius robustus) arrivano nella Laguna di San Ignacio (Baja california) ogni anno (circa15 mila esemplari), in piccoli gruppi dal gelido Mare di Bering, dopo un viaggio di 9000-11.000 km (una delle più lunghe migrazioni compiuta da un mammifero). Partono dall'Alaska a ottobre, quando il ghiaccio le spinge a sud. Viaggiano notte e giorno, percorrendo 120 km al giorno a una velocità media di 8 km orari. Entro inizio gennaio, la maggior parte si trova tra Monterey (California, Usa) e Los Cabos (Baja California) e spesso sono visibili dalla riva. Arrivano quindi nella laguna di San Ignacio che è un santuario per le balene grigie e fa parte della Riserva della Biosfera di Vizcaino (creata nel 1988 al centro della penisola su 55.555 kmq),dichiarato patrimonio UNESCO.
