Il Tempio Maggiore Nel 1870, con la breccia di Porta Pia, l'Esercito Italiano conquista Roma e la città con tutto il suo territorio viene incorporata nel Regno d'Italia; termina il potere temporale dei papi. In seguito Roma sarà dichiarata capitale del Regno. Nel XIX secolo gli ebrei raggiunsero, come nel resto d'Europa, la piena emancipazione e l'equiparazione dei diritti civili. Da questo momento le Comunità Ebraiche possono erigere, dopo secoli di limitazioni, sinagoghe monumentali. Si scelse quindi di erigere la sinagoga più imponente della città, il Tempio Maggiore, nello stesso quartiere in cui per secoli gli ebrei erano stati rinchiusi. Nell'area quindi dell'ex ghetto, demolita e bonificata a seguito del piano regolatore del 1888. I vincitori del concorso per il progetto della nuova sinagoga furono Osvaldo Armanni e Vincenzo Costa. Il Tempio fu inaugurato nel 1904, l'edificio monumentale venne sormontato da una cupola a base quadrata, rivestita in alluminio. L'interno, con una disposizione della bimah (il pulpito) non esattamente conforme alla tradizione del “rito romano”, è riccamente decorato nello stile art nouveau. (museoebraico di roma.it)
