Nell'immaginario popolare, soprattutto dei meno giovani, l'inverno è associato alle Caldarroste e viceversa. Il buon odore che dagli angoli delle strade si diffonde nell'aria accompagna i passanti di tante città italiane scandendo il passo al ritmo dello schioppettare delle castagne sulla brace. Servite nel classico “cartoccio” da venditori ambulanti, le Caldarroste, probabilmente, sono state il primo esempio al mondo di “street food”. Caloriche e soprattutto calde, erano e sono un buon modo per rifocillarsi e trovare un po' di sollievo dal freddo mentre si cammina per strada, proprio come fanno padre e figlio in piazza Venezia all'angolo del Vittoriano.
