La Croda del Béco, o Cu de ra Badéssa (non serve la traduzione), è una massiccia elevazione del gruppo della Croda Rossa che raggiunge i 2810 m, a sud domina con caratteristici lastroni levigati la Monte de Fòses e ai suoi piedi il Rifugio Biella (visibile nella foto), mentre a nord precipita per un chilometro verso il famosissimo Lago di Braies. La Croda sorge sul confine tra Cortina (dove è per l'appunto chiamata Cu de ra Badessa), Marebbe (dove è chiamata Gran Sas dla Porta) e Braies (dove è chiamata Grosser Seekofel), al limite nord del Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Ampezzane. Il nome Ampezzano Cu de ra Badéssa si lega ad un fatto storico. Il crinale della Croda del Béco fece per secoli da confine tra il territorio amministrato dalle Regole d'Ampezzo e quelli amministrati dal convento di Sonnenburg, oggi Castel Badia, in comune di San Lorenzo di Sebato presso Brunico. A metà del '400, la più nota delle badesse di Sonnenburg, l'energica e bellicosa Verena von Stuben, tentò con la forza di annettere la florida conca ampezzana ai territori soggetti all'autorità del convento, con i quali la cima confinava. Dopo lunghi scontri e mediazioni, nel 1471 la badessa (che tra l'altro si era più volte ribellata all'autorità del potente Vescovo di Bressanone, il Cardinale filosofo Nikolaus von Kues alias Nicolò Cusano) dovette desistere e la vertenza per il confine terminò. Fu così che gli Ampezzani presero a chiamare sdegnosamente e con feroce ironia il monte dalla forma tondeggiante, che ricordava loro la prosperosa e odiata suora, “el cu de ra Badéssa”.
