... then I take it off .... sent on August 09, 2022 (14:26) by Paolo P. 46 comments, 1450 views. [retina]

at 55mm, 1/640 f/11.0, ISO 400, hand held.

Just seeing a snake of water I give it to myself legs raised but I am aware that they are also
very useful to man, they hunt mice and various harmful animals and carriers of diseases.
In my garden I count 5 geckos and I am happy with it, they hunt harmful and annoying insects .
Congratulations Paul and a warm greeting :-P

Thank you Arrigo, always happy to meet you. Fear of snakes is atavistic and difficult to control.
The Australian uncle (speaking of sugar cane I think of the north of Queensland) has always gone well; in Australia I have been there several times and on a couple of occasions I have taken a squeeze of those .........
Hello dear, see you next time.
Paul

I'm not an expert but still it's beautiful ;-)
While I was camouflaged and hidden in the bushes to photograph the bee-eaters I heard something moving and I had near the foot a snake more or less like in the photo
Definitely a snake ....... I got up suddenly ...... but not to escape ..... to focus with the canvas :-P :-P ;-)

If I see correctly, I am not sure ..., I would say that at least he seems very polite because he showed up at the door dragging a flower with him.
Respectful connoisseur of etiquette or tempter as per ancient tradition? Mah...
Have a good weekend

She is a nurse (natrix), or vulgarly called a water snake. The design of the scales and the head vaguely resemble the viper aspis, but unmistakable are the elongated and non-truncated tail, and the round pupil is not as vertical as the viper. If you want to observe it closely :-D
Great story. However it is harmless.
Bye gios ;-)

Gios, as a former mountaineer of vipers I am quite experienced, what left me doubtful is the fact that where I live with water (ponds, rice fields etc ...) there is rather little except the ocean, and the area of the natrix natrix does not provide for Brittany, indeed, the limit of diffusion would be very far away. That said, after seven holidays in Australia avoiding tourist resorts and cities as much as possible, european snakes leave me completely calm.
Thank you for visiting and commenting.
A cordial greeting.

Even for me it is a snake of water.

The identification has already been given to you, remember that the coluber is uncertain or is widespread in Italy only in central and western Liguria, although equipped with poison does not involve risks for humans.
To be honest, even vipers can not be considered deadly, it is more correct to define the bite with the words "medical relevance" which, in some (fortunately rare) cases can also be relevant or lead to death (especially for debilitated subjects and children under 12 kg of weight).
In any case, never use the stick to kill them and never handle them with your bare hands.
Bravo for your behavior and for the "running" shot !!!
Good evening, Andrea

Claudio, thank you for the ride, always very kind.
Andrea , thanks for the complete comment. I am quite experienced in vipers and I have experienced several times that I am mild in character and a bite is always due to particular randomness. A couple of real scares I took them in Australia with taipan and king brown but... I'm here at the keyboard, it went well.
Thanks again to both of you and a cordial greeting.

Understood Paul, I obviously did not know where you lived .. anyway it is a natrice... as for the rest... well... since you are at the PC to post photos I would have liked to see it I the Taipana and the King Brown in Australia ... I love snakes... and since I photograph with the SLR it has not happened to me to cross a viper ... even the bisce have their dignity, but every now and then a viper would also please me (maybe without dogs behind).
Do you have photos of the two Australian "biscioni???
Thank you and good evening, Andrea

Maybe someone finds it in the garden and before shouting remembers this photo :-D
