La Strada Romana delle Gallie è un luogo di grande suggestione , in cui si respira la storia . Situata all'uscita del borgo di Donnas (Val d'Aosta) , è un tratto di strada romana , lungo poco più di duecento metri e largo cinque , giunto sino a noi dalla sua costruzione , datata intorno al primo secolo a. C. , e destinata a permettere alle Legioni romane l'accesso alla Valle del Rodano. Se ne può ammirare l'arco , intagliato nella roccia come del resto parte della stessa strada , la colonna miliare (o Millario) , in cui si può leggere ancora XXXVI (miglia) la distanza , di crca 50 km , da Augusta Praetoria (Aosta). Nel medio evo fu utilizzata come porta del borgo , che veniva chiusa durante la notte. Fa un certo effetto calpestare queste pietre , testimonianza tangibile della maestria e genio dei romani nella costruzione delle strade , ossatura importantissima dell'Impero che ne consentì l'esistenza e l'espansione . Sono chiaramente visibili le "rotaie" incise nella roccia dalle migliaia e migliaia di carri che nel corso dei secoli transitarono colà e , con un po' di fantasia , par quasi di vedere i soldati romani sfilare in lunghissime schiere , con i cavalieri e le salmerie , affrontando a piedi o a cavallo tragitti di centinaia di chilometri che li avrebbero portati a nuove guerre ai confini dell'Impero , in una epopea per noi , uomini del terzo millennio, quasi inconcepibile .
