Il Cairo, la più grande megalopoli africana, è famosa per la sua vita cosmopolita e vivace. Ci sono molte sue zone che risplendono di moschee, con le loro decorazioni, gli stucchi scolpiti e i riflessi dei mosaici. Basti pensare alla moschea di Ibn Tulun, da molti considerata la più bella, o a quella di Samarra: splendide costruzioni architettoniche con ampi spazi aperti che permettono alla luce luce naturale di avvolgere i vari ambienti.
