Il borgo di Torre Faro fa parte del Comune di Messina e sorge sul capo Peloro, punta della Sicilia, protesa verso la Calabria. Il punto più stretto dello Stretto di Messina ove si formano i "refoli" vortici nel mare sui quali si è creata la leggenda di Cariddi a Torre Faro e Scilla in prossimità della costa Calabra. Scilla e Cariddi secondo la leggenda sarebbero due mostri che muoverebbero le acque, inghiottendo tutto ciò che capita, imbarcazioni e naviganti compresi. In realtà le forti correnti creano questi vortici, in prossimità delle due coste e possono rendere difficoltoso il governo di piccole imbarcazioni.
