La vita di guerra della città di Bassano, presa a sé, è indubbiamente simile alla vita di tutte le città poste nell'immediato retrofronte. Particolarmente per Bassano è motivo di orgoglio, per la città che del Grappa ha vissuto le pene e le speranze, che ha sofferto con esso la vita di guerra, avamposto tra le città italiane. Il primo anno di guerra scorre per Bassano con quella entusiastica partecipazione che vive le ansie con quell'ottimismo iniziale che cambierà poi per la dura e maschia esperienza guerresca. Sorgono i comitati incaricati della raccolta di offerte, sorgono i laboratori per la lana ai soldati, per gli scaldarancio e per tutte quelle necessità alle quali la guerra veniva educando lo spirito dei cittadini. E' una gara appoggiata o iniziata dalle autorità per offrire i posti di ristoro, la Casa del soldato, per far partecipare il maggior numero possibile di cittadini allo spirito della guerra. Intanto fin dal 30 maggio del 1915 è dichiarato per la città lo stato di guerra; sono emanate le disposizioni di difesa contro gli aereoplani, è limitata la circolazione degli automobili. Incomincia la veste guerresca della città. Alla sera le luci devono essere soppresse; ma indubbiamente la sensazione e la inesperienza del pericolo possibile, non provocano la pronta comprensione da parte dei cittadini, e ciò è dovuto alla certezza che fossero misure appena precauzionali e non erano prese intanto nel senso preciso, che d'altronde non sembravano esigere.
