Il 14 novembre 1917 gli Austro-Tedeschi iniziavano la Prima Battaglia del Grappa (Battaglia d'arresto). La loro spinta era tale da far cadere i Monti Roncone e Tomatico, investendo il giorno dopo la nuova linea di difesa italiana Col della Beretta - Col d'Orso - Solarolo - Spinoncia - Montefenera. Dopo 13 giorni di combattimenti la Battaglia si spegneva rimanendo sostanzialmente invariato lo schieramento dei due eserciti. Questa era la prima battaglia combattuta dopo la Disfatta di Caporetto e l'aver mantenuto le posizioni sotto la spinta austriaca e germanica rappresentava per il nostro esercito una grande vittoria.
