Internamente al parco reale della Reggia di Caserta fu realizzato da John Andrew Graefer un giardino detto “di paesaggio” o “all'inglese”, voluto dalla regina Maria Carolina d'Asburgo-Lorena, moglie di Ferdinando IV. Graefer, noto nell'ambiente botanico internazionale per aver introdotto in Inghilterra numerose piante esotiche. Iniziati nel 1786, i lavori per la formazione del giardino durarono molti anni: furono introdotte piante e sementi individuate a Capri, Maiori, Vietri, Salerno, Cava de'Tirreni, Agnano, Solfatara, Gaeta. Caratterizzato da un apparente disordine, il giardino all'inglese si pone di emulare in tutto e per tutto la natura: corsi d'acqua, laghetti, “rovine” secondo la nuova moda legata alla scoperta di Pompei, piante autoctone ed esotiche popolano quest'area. Le fontane sono alimentate dall'acquedotto Carolino, inaugurato nel 1762, in larga parte costruito in gallerie che attraversano 6 rilievi e 3 viadotti. Nel 1798, in seguito all'arrivo dei francesi, John Andrew Graefer lasciò la Reggia di Caserta; è grazie ai suoi tre figli, che presero in fitto il giardino del Direttorio francese di Napoli, che quest'ultimo si è salvato dalla rovina e dall'incuria, arrivando intatto ai posteri.
