La Divina Commedia è sicuramente uno dei libri più commentati della storia della letteratura mondiale. Nessuno però ha pensato fino ad oggi di approfondire i rapporti del poema dantesco con uno dei territori più legati alla vita del poeta, quello aretino. Gli aretini, quei "botoli ringhiosi" poco amati da Dante, i rapporti del poema dantesco con uno dei territori più legati alla vita del poeta, quello aretino, che combatté nelle fila dell'esercito fiorentino contro l'esercito aretino nella Piana di Campaldino a Poppi. Nel poema dantesco fioccano i versi caustici verso Arezzo e i suoi abitanti. La risposta probabilmente va ricercata proprio nel rapporto conflittuale fra Dante e la realtà aretina, conflittualità che traspare in modo evidente nella stessa Divina Commedia. Basti pensare ai famosi versi sui "botoli ringhiosi" (gli aretini), ai quali anche il fiume Arno "torce il muso" (solo qualche chilometro prima di Arezzo, a Giovi, l'Arno gira a destra per imboccare il Valdarno e dirigersi a Firenze. "Volta il muso agli aretini", come scrive Dante Alighieri), cioè si volta e se ne va, oppure la definizione degli abitanti del Casentino come "brutti porci". Questi versi così sprezzanti verso Arezzo e i suoi abitanti vanno certamente inquadrati nel suo vissuto di esule, che ne esacerbò l'animo. La sua esperienza aretina fu caratterizzata da eventi negativi: le grosse difficoltà economiche del soggiorno immediatamente successivo all'esilio.
