La decima parte del tour fotografico del Santuario della Verna è dedicata alla Cappella delle reliquie di San Francesco d'Assisi. . Punto suggestivo e di profonda devozione all'interno della Basilica della Verna è la Cappella delle Reliquie di San Francesco. Tra tutte quelle esposte, il saio del Santo conservato nella teca nel centro della cappella è quello che catalizza maggiormente l'attenzione dei visitatori. E' l'abito che il "Poverello di Assisi" indossava nel momento che ricevette le stimmate, qui, in questo sacro monte, il 17 settembre del 1224. Non esiste nessuna prova storica e scientifica che questo sia realmente il saio delle stimmate. Si sa per certo che quest'abito già nel XIV secolo si trovasse nel Castello di Monteauto (nell'attuale Comune di Anghiari) di proprietà dei Conti Barbolani e ancor oggi appartenente alla stessa famiglia. Nel Quattrocento esisteva una sorta di pellegrinaggio verso questa importante reliquia, culto riconosciuto ufficialmente dal Vescovo Roberto di Arezzo nel 1444. Nel 1503, su incarico della Repubblica di Firenze, quattro religiosi francescani portano la preziosa "cappa" dalla cappella del Castello di Monteauto alla Chiesa del Convento Francescano di San Salvatore al Monte alle Croci nei pressi di Firenze. La motivazione di questo spostamento imposto, che ebbe inizio il 27 gennaio, fu che una reliquia così importante non poteva trovarsi in un luogo così ameno e difficilmente raggiungibile da chi volesse devotamente onorarlo. Negli anni Trenta del Cinquecento iniziò un periodo di difficile gestione del Convento di San Salvatore al Monte e negli anni sempre più incerto diveniva il suo futuro. Nel 1571 fu deciso di spostare la veste di San Francesco nella nota Chiesa fiorentina di Ognissanti sempre gestita da francescani, traferimento che avvenne il 6 maggio. In questa chiesa è rimasto per quattrocentotrenta anni. Nel 2001 maturò infatti la decisione che questo sacro abito dovesse tornare nel luogo più consono ad esso, il luogo da dove era partito quasi otto secoli prima e dove era stato testimone diretto delle Sante Stimmate ricevute da suo "indossatore", Fra' Francesco d'Assisi. Prima di questo ultimo trasferimento il saio di San Francesco passò sotto le attente "analisi e le cure" dell'Opificio delle Pietre Dure di Firenze che sottopose la veste ad un attento restauro e a un preciso trattamento scientifico per un'ottimale conservazione nel tempo. L'abito fece arrivo alla Verna nel 2003 all'interno della teca in cui era conservato nella Chiesa di Ognissanti. Nel 2007 fu dotato di una nuova teca, più elegante e tecnologicamente più evoluta per garantire un ottimale conservazione, in cui oggi possiamo ammirarlo e rendergli devoti omaggi all'interno della Cappella delle Reliquie di San Francesco nella Basilica della Verna.
