Sembra incredibile, eppure mi è capitato in questo periodo di invidiare la libertà e la serenità di quest'uomo nel deserto di Giza. La guida lo conosceva bene, e si fermò qualche minuto a parlare con lui, prima di salutarlo, gli lasciammo qualche sigaretta. Naghi mi disse, che il fumo era il suo unico vizio, non chiedeva mai niente a nessuno, per vivere faceva qualche lavoretto, aiutava ad allestire i banchi di souvenirs nei pressi delle Piramidi. Al calar della sera, quando cominciava a far freddo, si rifugiava nella sua casa di mattoni di fango, meno di venti metri, di una estrema pulizia. Era solo, libero, ma come dicevo, sereno, si isolava nella sabbia quando voleva starsene in pace ad osservare il gran turismo che gli girava intorno, e quando aveva voglia di far due chiacchiere, andava dai suoi amici commercianti. Era benvoluto da tutti, quasi sempre mangiava con loro, era felice e per niente al mondo avrebbe cambiato i suoi ritmi di vita. Ogni tanto sento Naghi, e chiedo di Asad: “Sente la mancanza delle voci festose dei turisti, ma è sempre lì al suo posto e aspetta che tutto torni come prima. Non ha perso la speranza”. Nemmeno io, amico Naghi, contaci, appena si può, tornerò all'ombra delle Piramidi.
