Sono stato ad Urk due volte nella ma vita: nel lontano 2007 con l'allora fidanzata Sabrina, oggi mia moglie, e questa estate con tutta la famiglia. Nel 2007 fummo copiti dall'atmosfera fiabesca di queste ridente villaggio del Flevoland e cosi abbiamo deciso di tornare. Il Flevoland è una provincia olandese giovane dove la maggior parte delle città e dei centri urbani sono moderni e sorti nel corso del XX° secolo grazie al progetto Afsluitdijk che ha consentito il prosciugamento di ampie porzioni di mare e la successiva valorizzazione dei polder, le terre situate a livelli inferiori a quelli del mare. Eppure anche nelle nuove terre del Flevoland ci sono cittadine con una storia secolare perché in precedenza erano… isole! E' appunto il caso dell' (ex) isola di Urk, che si trovava nel mezzo a quello che una volta era lo Zuiderzee. Per lungo tempo l'isola di Urk è rimasta piuttosto isolata e con pochi contatti con la terra ferma, almeno fino a quando dopo le bonifiche è diventata parte del Noordoostpolder: alcune caratteristiche della cittadina sono davvero uniche perché la comunità era abbastanza chiusa ed ha preservato nel tempo tradizioni, storie e caratteristiche. Urk era la classica isoletta, con un bel faro bianco e rosso costruito nella zona più alta per illuminare la notte e garantire il rientro a casa dei marinai e un bel porticciolo da cui i pescherecci partivano sfidando i freddi e spesso tempestosi venti del Nord per andare a gettare le reti nell'Atlantico. Ancora oggi gli abitanti di Urk basano la loro economia sulla pesca, sulle anguille e sulla coltivazione dei frutti di mare – sebbene tutto sia più complicato di una volta perché ora le imbarcazioni più grandi fanno base direttamente nei porti del mare del nord ed il pesce pescato viene trasportato ad Urk via terra; alla tradizionale economia basata sulla pesca e sulla cantieristica, si è oggi aggiunto il turismo locale ed internazionale, attratto da questa cittadina davvero interessante.
