Durante la Prima Guerra Mondiale il Monte Piana fu una zona aspramente contesa: presso la vetta nord c'erano gli Austriaci, presso la vetta sud gli Italiani. A difesa furono costruite postazioni e scavati tunnel, gallerie e trincee. Oggi le trincee si possono visitare, visto che molte sono state accuratamente ricostruite. Al Rifugio Bosi si possono vedere ritrovamenti dell'epoca della guerra. Su questa montagna 14.000 soldati Austriaci ed Italiani persero la vita e trovarono l'ultima dimora nel cimitero di guerra di Sorgenti o Croda Bagnata di Dobbiaco. Mettendo piede su Monte Piana (Monte Piano come riportano fonti austriache) capisci tutta una serie di eventi che hanno segnato la vita di 14000 militari, qui ti accoglie il rifugio Bosi, una piccola cappella dedicata ai caduti ed un obice che ricorda i giorni cruenti di quella tragica guerra. Percorrendo i sentieri che lo attraversano ti rendi conto delle centinaia di avvallamenti provocati dalle granate esplose durante le battaglie, i prati del Piana ne sono pieni, le trincee che si intersecano l'un l'altra in un serpentone nella pianura come una lunga ferita. Da qui si può ammirare lo scenario delle Dolomiti di Sesto e del Parco delle Tre Cime di Lavaredo, quella mattina in un momento di riposo e contemplazione delle Tre Cime mi sono messo seduto nel prato e come nel giorno del 24 maggio 1915 ho assistito in tempo di pace all'attacco alle "Tre Sorelle" come ho titolato la fotografia Nel primo commento troverete il racconto completo di quel primo e secondo giorno di guerra, se ne avete voglia vi propongo l'interessante lettura e la fotografia a colori questa volta
