Si tratta di una foto "rubata" scattata all'interno del museo annesso alla cattedrale di Messina, conosciuto con il nome di Tesoro del Duomo. La manta della Madonna della Lettera è l'opera più preziosa del Tesoro della cattedrale di Messina, in oro sbalzato, cesellato e inciso. Il nome allude alla funzione del rivestimento prezioso dell'immagine della Madre di Dio ("manta", "coperta), quindi alla riza.La manta fu realizzata per essere posta sopra la tavola bizantina, andata distrutta nell'incendio del 1943. Il senato messinese e i rappresentanti della Cappella della Lettera (secondo la tradizione la Vergine concesse la protezione alla città inviando una lettera in ebraico legata da una ciocca dei suoi capelli) la commissionarono il 5 novembre del 1658 all'argentiere, scultore ed architetto fiorentino, Innocenzo Mangani: il professore di scoltura, si obbligava anche a nome del figlio Ottaviano di realizzare una manta di rame per l'immagine della Madonna della lettera da ricoprire in seguito d'oro per il prezzo di onze 70 (...); di fare la manta di ramo di quella grandecza, larghecza, modo et forma conforme al modello di cera rossa, quale dovrà cesellare lavorare polire et redurla ad ogni perfecto fine in modo tale però che si possa coprire d'oro. Ingenti somme di denaro furono impiegate per questo splendido capolavoro d'arte orafa, che complessivamente costò trentamila scudi, di cui dodicimila solamente per l'acquisto dell'oro. Molti contribuirono a sostenere le spese e persino i laureandi universitari furono coinvolti dal Senatus Consulto a pagare una tassa di dodici tarì. Il manufatto, come riporta l'iscrizione incisa sotto il collo della Vergine, fu iniziato nel 1661 e ultimato nel 1668. L'opera è formata da due lamine sovrapposte, di cui una visibile in oro e l'altra interna, più pesante, in rame; esternamente è ricoperta da splendidi gioielli donati nei vari secoli alla Madonna da notabili personalità. Di particolare pregio è la corona della Madonna, creata precedentemente alla manta e adattata ad essa, arricchita di gioielli, catene in oro e smalti, pietre preziose. Presumibilmente l'opera può ricondursi a Pietro Iuvara e Mario d'Angelo che si erano impegnati con il tesoriere della cappella della Lettera a realizzare una corona per la Madonna e di mettere i gioielli come gli sarà ordinato; la raggiera del Bambino venne invece eseguita dallo stesso Mangani, come si rileva da documenti di archivio inediti. Risulta di raffinata lavorazione l'esecuzione delle vesti, i cui profili sono regalmente adornati ancora da collane preziose.
