La “vanitas” è un genere di pittura contenente elementi simbolici allusivi alla provvisorietà e caducità della vita e dei beni terreni. Vengono rappresentati quindi teschi, fiori recisi, frutti bacati, monete, orologi, candele spente, conchiglie, strumenti musicali ed altri oggetti attinenti al tema.
