La cappella rappresenta la scena di Gesù che viene inchiodato alla croce sulla cima del Calvario, alla presenza della Madonna con le pie donne e di san Giovanni, circondato dalla folla. Nel 1603 il vescovo Bascapè aveva previsto la realizzazione di questa cappella fra la tappa della Salita al Calvario e quella della Crocifissione. In realtà nel 1617, quando sale al Sacro Monte in visita pastorale il cardinale Ferdinando Taverna, l'edificio non era ancora cominciato, venne poi costruito nel quarto decennio del Seicento grazie alle offerte di Giovanni Antonio Tornelli. Giovanni d'Enrico, con la collaborazione di Giacomo Ferro e della sua equipe, plasmò le statue tra il 1635 e il 1638 circa. La scena però nel 1641, quando venne al Sacro Monte il vescovo Tornielli, era ancora da completare in alcuni particolari, come le capigliature e le armature che corredano i personaggi mentre la decorazione pittorica, opera di Melchiorre Gherardini detto “il Ceranino”, era pressoché completata (quarto decennio-inizio del quinto decennio del secolo). La ripresa è stata effettuata dall'esterno, la cappella ad oggi è ancora chiusa per restauro
