Fondata nel XII secolo dai monaci cistercensi, l'abbazia di Santa Maria di Lucedio (Trino Vercellese) svolse un ruolo fondamentale, prima, nella bonifica del territorio caratterizzato a quel tempo da zone paludose e boscaglie, successivamente nella coltivazione del riso diffondendo la risicoltura in tutto il vercellese. I cistercensi crearono un efficiente modello di gestione dei terreni, organizzando il territorio in “grange” (insediamenti rurali produttivi che godevano di notevole autonomia rispetto alla sede abbaziale). Tra gli elementi costruttivi che si sono conservati dell'antico monastero spicca l'inconsueto campanile a pianta ottagonale in stile gotico lombardo, facilmente riconoscibile anche a distanza nella campagna circostante.
