La Chiesa si erge al termine di 340 gradini che uniscono la città alta di Ragusa ad Ibla. Secondo una tradizione locale, priva tuttavia di riferimenti documentari, la chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale sarebbe stata edificata dai monaci Cistercensi dell'abbazia di S. Maria di Roccadia di Lentini, nella prima metà del secolo XIII. Ad onor del vero la chiesa risulta comunque già esistente agli inizi del secolo XIV. Essa riveste una notevole importanza dal punto di vista architettonico, poiché mantiene un'intera navata e numerosi resti lapidei di stile gotico che ricordano lo stile architettonico della città prima delle distruzioni operate dal terremoto del 1693.Il sisma non danneggiò gravemente la chiesa, ciò nonostante nella seconda metà del XVIII secolo, anche a causa dell'aumento della popolazione, l'edificio venne ampliato e in gran parte ricostruito...........
