La Cappadocia si trova nella regione dell'Anatolia centrale, su un altopiano nel mezzo della Turchia. Iscritta nella Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell'UNESCO nel 1985, la Cappadocia deve il suo aspetto affascinante ad antichissimi depositi di tufo e all'azione erosiva dei due vulcani Hasan Dagi ed Erciyes Dagi, avvenuta circa 8 milioni di anni fa, che ha dato vita a curiose forme coniche, torri, grotte, passaggi sotterranei e cucuzzoli noti come “Camini delle Fate”, dove poi l'ingegno umano ha saputo ricavare i propri rifugi, le abitazioni e i luoghi di culto. Inizialmente abitata dagli Ittiti tra il 1800 e il 1200 a.C., fu poi invasa dagli Assiri, dai Frigi, dai Lidi, dai Persiani e infine dai Romani che la trasformarono in loro provincia nel 17 d.C.
