Il trionfo del rococò, Il Santuario dei Quattordici Santi Basilika Vierzehnheiligen Bad Staffelstein, Arcidiocesi di Bamberga, Baviera. Il santuario dei Quattordici Santi (o dei Quattordici Santi Salvatori, Basilika Vierzehnheiligen in lingua tedesca) è una chiesa di stile tardo-barocco all'esterno e rococò all'interno, sita su una collina nel comune bavarese di Bad Staffelstein, Circondario di Lichtenfels nell'Alta Franconia, eretta nel XVII secolo su progetto dell'architetto Johann Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753) e dedicato ai quattordici santi salvatori. Attualmente gestito dall'Ordine francescano, è meta di circa mezzo milione di visitatori all'anno. Il 17 settembre 1445 era apparso un bambino che piangeva al pastorello Hermann Leicht di Langheim, pastore del convento di Langheim, quando il pastore gli si avvicinò, il bambino scomparse. In una seconda apparizione, il bambino aveva affianco a se due candele accese. Il 28 giugno 1446, nello stesso luogo, questa volta comparvero attorno al Bambin Gesù altri quattordici bimbi. Alla richiesta del pastorello chi fossero, essi risposero di essere i quattordici Santi Salvatori e chiesero che fosse loro dedicata sul luogo una cappella e dopodichè si alzarono fra le nubi e scomparirono. Essi apparvero anche ad una giovane gravemente ammalata, portata appositamente in loco, e questa miracolosamente guarì. L'abate del vicino monastero cistercense di Langheim cedette alle insistenze popolari e fece erigere nel 1448 per le immediate esigenze dei pellegrini una cappella in onore dei Quattordici Santi Salvatori. Nel 1543 fu eretta una chiesa in quanto nella guerra dei contadini, la cappella era stata distrutta. Questa fu poi sostituita da quella attuale, su progetto del noto architetto Johann Balthasar Neumann, la cui costruzione durò dal 1743 al 1772. La chiesa è uno dei massimi esempi del rococò tedesco. Molto particolare è il fatto che al centro di essa, dove di solito vi sono i banchi dei fedeli è stato collocato invece l'altare-baldacchino che ricopre il luogo dell'apparizione, visibile attraverso una grata. In cima al baldacchino vi è la statua di Gesù bambino e intorno vi sono i quattordici santi raffigurati con i simboli del martirio o della leggenda: S. Acazio (croce), S. Egidio (pastorale), Santa Barbara (torre), S. Biagio vescovo (frecce), S. Cristoforo (Gesù Bambino in spalla), S. Ciriaco diacono (palma), S. Dionigi vescovo (capo mozzato), S. Erasmo o S. Elmo vescovo (angelo), S. Eustachio (cervo), S. Giorgio (lancia), Santa Caterina (ruota), Santa Margherita (drago), S. Pantaleone (chiodo), S. Vito (palma) Quest'ultimo, protettore di Polignano a Mare. Il pittore di corte di Magonza Giuseppe Appiani eseguì i lavori di affresco e anche le pitture per l'altare.
