Questa cittadina nel sud della regione, è una delle attrazioni-cartolina della Baviera e deve la sua fama alle case affrescate, ai suoi intagliatori, alla rappresentazione della Passione di Cristo e alle piste da sci di fondo. Percorrendo le vie del centro storico si nota la bellezza delle case, affrescate con temi prevalentemente religiosi ma anche legati a celebri favole. Già nel '500 si conosceva la bravura degli artigiani di Oberammergau e verso la metà dell'Ottocento venne fondata una scuola che ha istruito diverse generazioni di artisti del legno, alcuni specializzati solo in crocifissi.................................................................................................
