La Monument Valley , uno dei simboli degli Stati Uniti occidentali , è un pianoro di origine fluviale , il Colorado Plateau , collocato a circa 1500 m. s.l.m. , al confine tra Utah e Arizona . Il territorio , prevalentemente pianeggiante , è cosparsa da guglie rocciose celebri in tutto il mondo come icona del West che sono definite butte o mesas a seconda della loro conformazione . Questi edifici naturali costituiti da roccia e sabbia hanno la forma di torri dal colore rossastro , per la presenza di ossido di ferro , con la sommità piatta più o meno orizzontale ; alla base si accumulano detriti composti da pietrisco e sabbia . La zona fa parte della Navajo Nation Reservation ed è un Tribal Park con ingresso a pagamento .
