@Claudio: Thank you very much for your further explanation and I'm sorry for the delay in replying! This butterfly was particularly active. You may well be right about the settings but I was finding it very difficult to get a clear shot, so I selected a shutter speed of 1/2000 and allowed the camera to choose the aperture and ISO. In colour, the image does not appear high-key. The butterfly was black and white, so it didn't seem to me to be such a terrible thing to convert the whole image to b/n . A you say, a matter of taste! I have many more butterfly images - so the next one will be in colour!
